Look at that vast empty beach. My idea of heaven… at the right time of year, of course.
If you’ve been reading British Food and Travel, you’ll know that while I like the beach – I grew up by the beach – I have very specific requirements for visiting it. The biggest requirement is as few people as possible. Don’t get me wrong, I love watching people have fun on the beach in the summer. Little kids building sandcastles. Dogs playing in the surf. It’s fun to watch, but not to experience. My pale English skin burns at the drop of a hat, even under a concrete layer of SPF 50, something I learned after a trip to Hilton Head was followed by several weeks of wearing burn patches!
No, I prefer the coast in the winter. I want to feel the wind blowing, to hear the waves, and to see them crashing on the deserted sands. I’m odd that way. But that’s why a trip to Oregon in October was perfect for me. We were in Portland to screen a movie at the H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival, but I wanted to get out of the city to see the sea and the mountains. So here’s a quick picture montage to convince you that Oregon in October is a great time to visit.

I should add that by this point, my husband was beyond excited to recognize a number of locations from that classic Gen X movie, The Goonies. I am one of the few people I know who has never seen the movie. I’m guessing it wasn’t as big in the UK maybe? And I tried watching it recently but it’s one of those that you had to see as a kid to appreciate. Nevertheless, Goonies fans will love it here.
