Moon shining over Lisbon

Portugal never ranked particularly high on my list of dream destinations. Iceland, Namibia, Italy, Finland… they’re all places I long to explore. But Portugal? I’d never given it much thought except for the image I grew up with in the 80s of it being the place for people with money. We went to a holiday camp in Devon or Norfolk for holidays. Some people went to Spain’s Costa del Sol. The posh people went to the Algarve.

But when my husband had to travel there for work and suggested we add a week of vacation, I decided to give it a go. After all, it was somewhere new, and the promises of sun, coast, good food, and history were too good to pass.

And Portugal is wonderful!

It’s beautiful, friendly, and very affordable. We spent time on the coast in Cascais before moving to Lisbon where I spent several happy days exploring solo.

Over the next week or so, I’ll be sharing a number of posts about the trip. I’ll share why you should go to Cascais, how to do (and how not to do) Sintra, some of the many things to see and do in Lisbon, what to eat and drink, and why you should take comfy pair of walking shoes.

Join me as I discover Portugal.
